Capital Calligraphers invites you to the 27th annual All Oregon Calligraphers Conference on Saturday, October 25, 2008. We’ll gather in Monmouth at Western Oregon University in the Werner University Center.
We are excited to bring Suzanne Moore as our keynote speaker. After several years as an Art Director of the Lettering Design and Font Development Team at American Greetings, Suzanne moved to Vashon Island in the Puget Sound and returned to a life of creating manuscript books full-time. In the past three years she has created eleven new book works as well as completing four new illuminations for the Saint John’s Bible.
Suzanne’s keynote address will be Elucidare: Modern Manuscripts, Shining Examples. With brief historic references to begin her talk, Suzanne will present a selection of her current work and the work of contemporary artists who combine letter forms and imagery. The focus will be on examples of contemporary illumination, touching on the work she has done for the Saint John’s Bible project.
Expect a fun-filled day with morning hospitality, vendors, 4X4 Exhibit, short general meeting, keynote address, a tasty lunch, and choice of an afternoon class. All this for just $35!

ELUCIDARE is a Greek word meaning “completely bright and clear; from lucere: to shine.”
How does one balance lettering and image on the page to make it “shine,” creating an equilibrium between verbal and visual content, between clarity and complexity, between intensity and subtlety? How can an illuminating image be created without using gold?
This session will include hands-on techniques as well as providing useful information and inspiration for future work. We will create paintings that originate with pen-drawings and consider the keys to the harmonious relationship of lettering to image.
